As you all know, I just reviewed the M1 iPad Pro and found that machine to be an amazing device.
But that got me thinking, hmmm, how about the M1 MacBook Air though? Since it is a dedicated laptop with MacOS, it is actually a bit cheaper depending on the variant and accessories that you choose.
So here are 5 reasons why I think you should consider getting the M1 MacBook Air, because it just might be the best laptop device you can get!
Reason 1: Design
Now back in 2018, Apple redesigned the MacBook Air to make it look more modern and more similar to their Pro line of laptops and they have not changed much of the design since then, which honestly is not a bad thing. I mean why fix something that is not broken right? And you are also bound to see other brands following the same exact design of Apple’s MacBook too.
The laptop is made up of a full metal unibody design and as with many other MacBook, it is super sturdy and rigid. This is honestly one thing that I love about Apple laptops as they’ve always paid super close attention to the design of the device and there is never any flex or bends that you might find in some other laptops.
The device itself is extremely lightweight as it weighs just over 1.2 kilograms which really does make it easy to carry around, but well, I’m not really going anywhere right now. Anyway, if you were to head out and need to bring your laptop along with you, this would be the perfect device as you would honestly not even feel it in your bag.
The MacBook Air only has 2 ports which can be a problem for some especially if you are plugging in a monitor and keyboard, so do keep that in mind.
But for me, since I own the 2017 MacBook Pro, I can use any of those dongles which I have purchased previously, and USB-C dongles and even USB-C hubs are getting pretty affordable these days. I will leave some links below for you guys to check it out.
Aside from that, even though some might not consider the speaker a “design element” since you will find the speaker grills on the side. I found that although the speaker grilles looked small, I was pleasantly surprised with how loud and good they sound overall.
There is also no touch bar on this laptop but that is not really a reason to not buy this machine as the touch bar is not really something that you will miss. As for me, when I used the 2017 MacBook Pro, it was nice it was there, but it is not something which I felt that I couldn’t live without.
So yes, as with every Apple device, they really have done a good job with this premium build and design and THAT would surely be one of the reasons to consider getting this.
Reason 2: Keyboard
Okay so the keyboard is technically a design aspect but I feel it deserved its own category.
In 2015, Apple introduced the butterfly keyboard design in the MacBook, which was not really met with a good reception. The keys felt mushy, there was not much travel and many were complaining that some keys just would not work.
With the new MacBook, Apple redesigned the keyboard and introduced the Magic Keyboard which is what we have on the MacBook Air. So this new Magic Keyboard is just a way of saying that Apple has gone back to the traditional scissor switches.
Testing this out beside my daily laptop, the 2017 MacBook Pro, I have to say that the Magic Keyboard is way better. It overall feels really good to type on and the keys do not feel too mushy as mentioned earlier. There is also much better travel with the Magic Keyboard.
So, honestly this keyboard is a really big upgrade that I feel is underrated as well.
Reason 3: Battery Life
The MacBook Air has been known to be Apple’s thin and light device, which it definitely is, but in the past that has resulted in some mediocre battery life.
The old MacBook Air’s with Intel chips would not really last long on a single charge with many saying the most they used to get would be about 5 hours on a charge but with the M1 chip, it is a completely different story.
The laptop has a 49.9Wh battery which is not relatively big, but this is where software and hardware play a big role.
MacOS Big Sur and the M1 chip work really well together, which is no surprise as they are both built from the ground up by Apple, and deliver some REALLY good battery life for a device this thin and light.
The battery on this device is rated for up to 15 hours and has a 40-percent increase over the Intel models which is honestly pretty impressive.
From my personal use, I can definitely say that the chip is extremely efficient which does definitely result in some really good battery life.
Overall if you need a machine that will last you all day, you cannot go wrong with this.
Reason 4: Absolute Silence
With the 2020 Intel based MacBook Air, Apple did something a bit questionable – they did not install a proper heat sink on the device which resulted in the fan kicking in even when doing simple tasks.
While it does not affect the performance of the device, the Air is meant for simple tasks so honestly the fan should not be kicking in and getting loud when doing simple things. However, with the M1 MacBook Air, Apple made it a fanless design which solved this issue.
Now don’t get me wrong, a fan on the laptop would be much better especially if you are planning on doing intense video editing but with the M1 chip, this laptop does run unbelievably cool.
When doing simple tasks like writing up documents or watching videos, the laptop does not feel warm to the touch at all. Even when increasing the intensity with a bit of photo editing and some video editing, the laptop does run slightly warm but nothing to be alarmed about.
If you want a laptop for intense editing like I do, you should definitely go for the MacBook Pro but for some light work, the M1 chip just breezes through it and does not even get the laptop hot.
I was honestly skeptical about the lack of fan as I was worried the laptop might overheat, but I am pleasantly surprised with how much you can do without the laptop getting hot.
And I could totally get used to this silence….shhh.
Reason 5: The Performance
Then the final reason you should consider picking up this machine is the performance, especially if you look at the performance-to-price ratio.
As everyone is already aware, the M1 chip is an extremely efficient and fast chip even at the base model MacBook Air.
If you pick up the base model, you will be getting the 8-core M1 chip with an integrated 16-core neural engine, a 7 core GPU, 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM for RM 4,399.
But if I had to give my advice, if you guys would like to make a purchase, I would totally at least upgrade the memory up to 16GB of unified memory instead of upgrading the storage, since you can always buy an external storage if you guys really needed the extra space.
Conclusion
So who exactly is this laptop for? Well guys, if you are looking for a machine to get some light work done and some video or photo editing, you really cannot go wrong with the base M1 MacBook Air.
I personally feel that this is the best bang for your buck MacBook that is available right now. You have got the power of the higher end Macs in a thin and light design for a much cheaper price.
And I honestly cannot recommend this enough to anyone who is looking for a thin and light laptop, which performs like a beast and comes with no drawbacks, even with an excellent price factor, making this a great choice whether or not you are a previous MacOS user or going into the MacOS ecosystem, which I am very positive you will love and appreciate.
Alright guys, so these are my top 5 reasons why you should consider getting the M1 MacBook Air as your new laptop. Do let me know your thoughts down below about what you think of this machine.
