Well, as a self-proclaimed coffeeholic, when Nespresso mentioned that they’re gonna bring the Vertuo Next model to Malaysia, I couldn’t resist getting my jittery hands on this machine because this sleek machine isn’t just ridiculously easy to use, it has more brains than your average barista! So, let me spill the beans… you know, coffee beans… whether or not this could be your dream coffee machine!

You know those advanced home coffee machines, right? Well, I have one at home and while it had some great quality brew, the common issue is that most of the time, making an espresso is like competing in a caffeinated version of the Olympics – it is a race against the clock! 

You got to grind your beans and not to spill them, warm up the portafilter, tamp down the grounds, pull the perfect espresso shot, and then clean up after the aftermath. Now, it is rewarding but also a potential disaster zone because you are one false move away from a coffee catastrophe because I’ve accidentally spilled coffee grounds many times on my kitchen counter before which was quite a pain to wipe off. 

Also, that is just one shot of espresso, what if you want two? Double the time! What if you want three? Ha! you get my point. Not everyone, including myself, has the time to pull one (or even two) out every single morning, because life can get pretty hectic from time to time.

So comes this machine the Nespresso Vertuo Next, which may be the simplest coffee machine that I’ve used so far, where even a sleep-deprived zombie will be able to use! 

Now, it’s like a three-piece coffee orchestra. First, we have the water tank at the back, serenading us from the back. 

Then the side act or the compartment recycles the capsules post-brew.

Then finally, this cute little puck in front holds your coffee mug like a champ! 

It is adjustable for all your caffeine needs – a tiny cup, a regular mug, or even a full-blown carafe! Yep, this machine can whip up a carafe of coffee in just one Nespresso Vertuo capsule.

Then for the grand finale, before hitting the button, we have the lever to unlock and lock the capsule chamber.

 

Capsule Technology

Now, speaking of capsules, the reason why you are also seeing this review here on a tech channel is because of this – the Nespresso Vertuo capsules. It is seriously packing some serious tech chops because it’s like your coffee has a degree in Engineering. 

Now, Nespresso’s unique capsule system, which is basically coffee geniuses. They are filled by the Centrifusion technology – a combination of centrifugal and infusion where you can think of it as those spinning teacup rides at the amusement park, but on a caffeine high, moving super fast! 

Then when you take a look at the rim of the capsule underneath, see these funky lines? Yep, this is actually a barcode that tells the machine how to make the perfect brew every single time. 

So yeah, it’s like having your own personal barista who never messes up your order because we’re talking about cup size, temperature, spin speed, flow rate, and even water-to-coffee contact time.

How to Use

All right, so it is time for a demo because here is how you can get started with your shiny new Nespresso machine. But don’t worry, it’s as easy as a pie, or shall I say, coffee? 

Step 1: For first-time use, fill the water tank with filtered water and attach it securely to the base, put in a container under the spout, and hit the button three times in two seconds to kick off the rinse function. Now, this is just a one-time thing to give the machine a good clean.

Step 2: Ready to Brew – press the top button and let the machine heat up for 30 seconds, then check your Nespresso capsule to see how much coffee it will make, grab a mug according to the amount of coffee needed, then adjust the puck or the holder based on your mug size.

Step 3: Unlock the head, pop in the coffee capsule, and hit the top button once again, and voila, you got yourself a steaming cup of joe, complete with a beautiful crema on top. 

And here’s a bonus, when you unlock the head again, watch as the used capsule vanishes into the trash compartment at the side of the machine. So no mess, no fuss! 

So yes, it is seriously that simple, just pop in the capsule and press the button and you’re all set! 

 

Coffee Quality

All right, how about the quality of the coffee then? Well, I would say on the higher end, considering how effortless it is to make. The Il Caffe blend that I tried definitely woke me up, it’s like a friendly slap to the face! If you really want to wake up in the morning or even get a boost in the middle of the day.

And when it comes to the taste, the Vietnamese and the Indonesian Robusta and a dash of Colombian Arabica, the texture was silky smooth, with Nespresso signature bitterness because this potent brew has your back if you really need to pull an all-nighter.

But, if this is not your cup of tea, or coffee, fear not because there are over 30 different capsules to explore, so you’re bound to find your perfect match.

 

Pricing

So how much does it cost then? Well, the Vertuo Next Premium model is priced at RM1,299 (~USD284) while the Vertuo Next lineup is at RM1,199 (~USD262)

Now, in case you’re wondering that’s pretty expensive. Well, let’s do some math, shall we? Well, a café espresso will set you back about RM10 and that is considered quite cheap for this day and age, while a Nespresso capsule starts at just RM3! That’s 70% cheaper and if you indulge in a daily espresso, you’ll save up to RM210 per month! So in less than 6 months, the machine will pay for itself and keep on saving you money! 

Now, sure, you spend a tiny bit on water and also electricity, but then again, this machine won’t use a lot of electricity, and water is cheap here in Malaysia. So now, this all makes perfect sense, right?
