Apple Halts Vision Pro Production Amidst Slow Demand

Apple Vision Pro Might Stop Production by the End of the Year

Apple’s ambitious foray into mixed reality with the Vision Pro appears to be facing headwinds. According to a report by The Information, the tech giant has significantly reduced production of the headset since early summer. Sources involved in building its components suggest that Apple might even discontinue the current version by the end of the year.

The initial enthusiasm that greeted the Vision Pro’s launch in February has seemingly faded, primarily due to its hefty price tag and growing competition from more affordable options like Meta Platforms’ Quest headsets. While the headset starts at around USD3,500 (~RM15,230) in the U.S., Meta’s Quest 3 is available for significantly less at around USD500 (~RM2,175).

Suppliers of the headset have so far produced enough components to manufacture between 500,000 and 600,000 headsets. One supplier even halted production of Vision Pro components in May. Additionally, Apple has reportedly informed its assembler, Luxshare, that it may need to wind down manufacturing in November.

Despite these setbacks, Apple remains committed to mixed reality. The company is reportedly working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro with fewer features, aiming to release it before the end of 2025. This strategy is intended to broaden the headset’s appeal and potentially boost sales.
