Following the recent release of WhatsApp for iPad last week, Meta is reportedly moving full steam ahead with the development of a dedicated Instagram app for Apple’s tablet. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, internal testing of the app is currently underway, with the company aiming for a release “later this year.”

This development comes after a long wait for iPad users who have had to rely on a scaled-up iPhone version or the web interface, neither of which provides an optimal experience on the larger screen. Meta had previously cited concerns about how Instagram’s traditional square images would appear on the iPad’s display as a reason for the delay. However, Gurman suggests that technology has now “caught up,” and these concerns are no longer holding back the app’s development.

Users, especially content creators and businesses, are eagerly anticipating the launch of a native Instagram app for iPad, expecting it to bring significant improvements. The larger display will allow for a more detailed preview of posts, ensuring higher visual quality. Furthermore, a dedicated app is expected to offer a more intuitive and feature-rich experience, potentially supporting new content formats optimised for the iPad’s screen, such as landscape videos – a format that could be further encouraged by Instagram’s recent increase in Reel lengths to three minutes.

The potential for a TikTok ban in the United States has spurred Meta to expedite the development of both the WhatsApp and Instagram iPad apps. The theory is that if TikTok faces another ban, having well-designed iPad apps for these platforms could attract users and creators looking for alternative platforms.
