Google to Implement Battery Voltage Reduction on Pixel 6a Amid Overheating Concerns

Pixel 6a Faces Battery Voltage Reduction Due to Overheating Risks

Google is set to roll out a mandatory software update for a subset of Pixel 6a smartphones, which will reduce their battery voltage as a precautionary measure against overheating and potential fire hazards. This move comes after multiple reports of Pixel 6a units spontaneously catching fire, particularly while charging.

This isn’t the first time Google has taken such steps with its “a-series” phones. Earlier this year, the Pixel 4a received a similar Battery Performance Program update that cut its battery life to mitigate overheating issues and fire risks.

Pixel 6a Update Details

The upcoming update for the Pixel 6a will specifically target units that have undergone more than 400 charging cycles. A string in the latest Android 16 QPR1 beta release revealed evidence of these changes. Google has also issued an official statement regarding the matter:

“A subset of Pixel 6a phones will require a mandatory software update to reduce the risk of potential battery overheating. The update will enable battery management features that will reduce capacity and charging performance after the battery reaches 400 charge cycles. We’ll contact impacted customers next month, with all the information they need to address the issue.”

For context, the previous Pixel 4a update saw its maximum battery voltage reduced from 4.45V to 3.95V, resulting in a significant 56% drop in charging capacity. Analysts anticipate that the 6a will experience a similar reduction in performance. Images circulating online, such as those published by Android Authority, show burnt units, underscoring the severity of the issue.

If you own a 6a, it is advisable to check your device’s battery health. You can do this by navigating to Settings > Battery > Battery health. Should your phone display an alert, it is strongly recommended that you consider getting the battery swapped to prevent potential issues.
