ICYMI: Xiaomi 17 Pro Series to Feature New Dual Display
In a move that caught everyone by surprise, Xiaomi has announced it is leaping from its 15 series directly to the Xiaomi 17 lineup, skipping the Xiaomi 16 altogether. This bold strategy appears to be a direct challenge to Apple’s latest devices, and Xiaomi is pulling out all the stops with a striking new design on its top-tier model.

While rumours have been swirling, the company’s official Weibo account provided a brief, but telling, glimpse of the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, confirming a significant new feature: a rear cover display. The image, which was quickly removed, showcased a large, rounded rectangular camera module that isn’t just for photos. It also houses a sizable secondary screen. The new design choice is a stark departure from the previous Xiaomi 15 series.
This isn’t the first time Xiaomi has experimented with a rear display, but this new implementation appears far more advanced than the small panel on the Mi 11 Ultra. The new screen on the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is expected to show essential information like the time and notifications, and will also function as a camera viewfinder, making it easier to take high-quality selfies with the primary camera system.
The image also confirmed that the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will feature a triple-camera setup with Leica branding, comprising a main camera, a periscope telephoto lens, and a third ultra-wide-angle lens, all positioned below the new display.
The Xiaomi 17 series is expected to be powered by the newly named Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip. The company’s decision to skip the Xiaomi 16 series entirely and go straight to the 17 line is a clear signal of its ambition to compete directly with Apple and other premium manufacturers in the high-end market.
