Apple Unveils M5 Chip, Heralding a New Era of On-Device AI Performance

Apple have announced the M5, its next-generation custom silicon, signalling a monumental leap forward in artificial intelligence capabilities for its product lineup. The new chip, built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology, promises to redefine performance benchmarks for the new 14-inch MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Apple Vision Pro.

At the core of the M5’s innovation is a redesigned 10-core GPU, which now includes a dedicated Neural Accelerator in each core. This new architecture delivers an astonishing 4x increase in peak GPU compute performance for AI tasks compared to its predecessor, the M4. This enhancement is set to dramatically accelerate AI-driven workflows, from running complex diffusion models in creative apps to operating large language models directly on a user’s device.

Beyond AI, the M5 chip brings significant upgrades across the board. It features a new 10-core CPU with up to four performance cores, delivering up to 15 percent faster multithreaded performance than the M4. The chip also boasts a faster 16-core Neural Engine and a nearly 30 percent increase in unified memory bandwidth, now reaching 153GB/s.

Graphics performance has also seen a substantial boost, with up to 45 percent higher performance than the M4, thanks in part to third-generation ray tracing and a rearchitected dynamic caching system. For Apple Vision Pro users, this translates to crisper details and more fluid display performance, with refresh rates increasing up to 120Hz.

The M5’s enhanced power is designed to seamlessly integrate with Apple’s software, promising immediate performance gains for apps utilising frameworks like Core ML and Metal 4. The faster Neural Engine will also enhance on-device Apple Intelligence features, such as Image Playground and the creation of spatial scenes in the Photos app.

In line with its environmental goals, Apple emphasised that the power-efficient performance of the M5 chip helps its latest products meet high standards for energy efficiency, contributing to the company’s goal of being carbon neutral by 2030.
