In Bid for Online Safety, Malaysia Proposes Age 16 Limit for Social Media
The Malaysian government is set to engage in discussions with major technology companies to raise the minimum age for social media users from the current 13 to 16 years old. This proposal is a significant step aimed at addressing the increasing concerns over harmful online content and the recent surge in violence among students.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil confirmed that a government delegation, including officials from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Royal Malaysia Police, will travel to Singapore to meet with representatives from various social media platforms. The primary agenda of this meeting is to deliberate on the regulatory and technical aspects of implementing a higher age restriction.
The government is also looking into a more stringent age verification process through an “electronic Know Your Customer” (eKYC) system. This would require new users to register for social media accounts using official identification documents like the MyKad, passport, or the national digital ID, MyDigital ID, to ensure the age limit is effectively enforced.
This move to tighten online regulations follows a tragic school stabbing incident that has heightened public concern about the safety of children online. The government believes that raising the age limit for social media use will help shield minors from negative influences and inappropriate content that can contribute to aggressive behavior.
The upcoming meeting in Singapore is expected to be a critical step in determining the practicability of these proposed measures. The government is anticipated to announce further details on the implementation of these new policies following the conclusion of their discussions with the tech giants.
