Xiaomi and Leica Deepen Ties with New “Co-Creation” Partnership for Xiaomi 17 Ultra
As the launch of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra approaches next week, Xiaomi and camera powerhouse Leica have announced a significant evolution in their strategic partnership. Moving beyond their previous “joint R&D” arrangement, the two companies are entering a new “co-creation model” that promises deeper integration of hardware and optical engineering.
The announcement, originally shared on Weibo, sets the stage for what Xiaomi describes as a “groundbreaking new generation of optical system solutions” debuting in the upcoming flagship device.
A Mobile Photography First
The centrepiece of this new collaboration is the 17 Ultra’s telephoto capabilities. Xiaomi confirmed the device will feature the industry’s first Leica Apochromatic (APO) certified telephoto lens for mobile.
In traditional photography, apochromatic lenses are designed to correct chromatic aberration (colour fringing) more effectively than standard lenses by bringing three wavelengths of light into focus on the same plane. For mobile users, Xiaomi claims this will result in superior detail reproduction in high-contrast scenes and significant leaps in low-light image quality.
Custom Hardware
Alongside the new optics, the 17 Ultra will use a 1-inch type sensor for its main camera. While 1-inch sensors are becoming a gold standard in premium smartphones, Xiaomi notes that this specific sensor was developed explicitly for mobile devices, suggesting optimisations for power efficiency or form factor that off-the-shelf sensors might lack.
The shift to a “co-creation” model suggests that Leica’s involvement now extends further into the initial product definition and engineering phases, rather than just tuning and optical certification.
The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is scheduled to be officially unveiled next week, where full specifications and pricing will be confirmed.
