Grok is Back: MCMC Lifts Restriction on AI Chatbot

MCMC Restores Access to Grok AI Effective Today

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has officially lifted the temporary restriction on Grok, allowing users in Malaysia to resume access to the AI chatbot effective today.

The decision follows a confirmation that X (formerly Twitter) has implemented additional preventive and security measures to address concerns regarding the misuse of the platform.

MCMC initially restricted access to Grok earlier this month, citing repeated misuse of the tool to generate obscene, sexually explicit, and non-consensual manipulated images. The commission acted after reports surfaced that the AI was being used to create harmful content involving women and minors, sparking a wider conversation about AI safety protocols.

The lifting of the ban comes after a meeting held on January 21 between MCMC, the Ministry of Communications, and representatives from X. During this engagement, X provided clarification and assurances regarding the platform’s compliance with Malaysian laws.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil revealed in Parliament yesterday that the commission had received 17 specific complaints regarding Grok. He added that X representatives have now assured authorities that the application can no longer be misused to create pornographic or sexual content.

The restriction in Malaysia was part of a broader global backlash. Following similar concerns raised by other nations, including Indonesia and the Philippines, X announced a series of safety updates on January 15. These include “technological measures” to prevent Grok from editing images of real people in revealing clothing and geoblocking the generation of specific sensitive content in jurisdictions where it is illegal.
