Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform with On-Device AI and 3nm Architecture

Qualcomm has introduced the new Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform, a next-generation chipset designed to bring powerful on-device artificial intelligence to smartwatches and other wearables.

The company says the new platform represents a shift in how wearable devices operate. Instead of acting mainly as notification hubs or fitness trackers, the goal is to turn them into proactive AI companions capable of processing data directly on the device.

At the heart of the platform is a dedicated neural processing unit that allows wearables to run AI workloads locally without relying on cloud processing.

Dedicated AI Processing for Wearables

The Snapdragon Wear Elite is the first wearable platform to feature a dedicated NPU capable of delivering up to 12 TOPS of AI performance.

According to Qualcomm, this allows devices to run AI models with up to two billion parameters directly on the wearable. The result is faster responses, improved privacy, and more personalised experiences since data can be processed locally rather than sent to remote servers.

The chip also uses a 3nm architecture designed to balance high performance with energy efficiency.

Major Performance Boost

Performance gains are significant compared to previous wearable platforms.

Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon Wear Elite offers:

  • Up to 5× improvement in single-core CPU performance
  • Up to 7× faster GPU speeds
  • Support for complex AI models running directly on device

The platform includes a CPU clocked up to 2.1GHz alongside an Adreno GPU that supports modern graphics APIs, including OpenGL ES 3.2 and Vulkan 1.2.

Six-Way Connectivity System

Connectivity is another major focus.

The platform introduces what Qualcomm calls a “hexa-connectivity” system, combining multiple wireless technologies into one chipset.

  • Satellite connectivity via NB-NTN
  • Micro-power Wi-Fi 6
  • Bluetooth 6.0
  • Ultra-wideband (UWB)
  • Multi-constellation GNSS positioning

Together, these technologies allow wearables to maintain reliable connections across different environments while enabling new features such as location tracking, satellite messaging, and smart device interaction.

Better Battery Life and Faster Charging

Despite the performance gains, Qualcomm says the 3nm architecture enables up to 30 per cent longer battery life.

Charging speeds also improve significantly, with devices capable of reaching 50 per cent battery in under 10 minutes.

The platform also includes intelligent low-power processing islands that handle background tasks more efficiently, reducing energy consumption.

Built for Next-Generation Smart Devices

The Snapdragon Wear Elite platform supports a wide range of operating systems, including Android, Wear OS, Linux, and FreeRTOS. It can also connect to more than 50 sensors, enabling richer contextual data for AI features such as health tracking, environmental awareness, and motion analysis.

Smartwatch manufacturers are expected to begin adopting the new chipset in upcoming devices, though Qualcomm has not yet announced specific products that will use the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform.
