Xbox Brings Automatic Super Resolution to ROG Xbox Ally X in April Preview
TL;DR: Microsoft is bringing its AI-powered Auto SR feature to the ROG Xbox Ally X in April. It upscales games at the OS level, improving visuals and performance without needing developer support.
Microsoft has announced that its Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) technology will be arriving on the ROG Xbox Ally X in a public preview starting this April.
The announcement was made during the Game Developers Conference 2026, where Microsoft outlined its plans to bring AI-powered performance enhancements to handheld gaming devices.
AI Upscaling Without Game Support
Automatic Super Resolution is a Windows-level feature that uses AI to upscale games in real time. By rendering games at a lower internal resolution and then enhancing the output, Auto SR can deliver sharper visuals while improving overall performance.
Unlike traditional upscaling technologies such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), Intel XeSS, or NVIDIA DLSS, Auto SR does not require developers to integrate support into individual games.
This means even older titles or games without built-in upscaling can benefit from improved image quality and smoother performance.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is equipped with a Ryzen AI chip that includes a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This allows the Auto SR model to run directly on the device rather than relying on the GPU.
By offloading AI processing to the NPU, the system can free up GPU resources while also reducing power consumption. This is particularly important for handheld gaming, where battery life and thermal efficiency are key considerations.
The introduction of Auto SR could mark a meaningful shift in how performance optimisation is handled on Windows-based handhelds. Instead of relying on per-game support, system-level AI upscaling offers a more universal solution that works across a wide range of titles.
For devices like the ROG Xbox Ally X, this could translate to better performance in demanding games and improved visuals in older ones, all without requiring additional input from developers.
Availability
The Auto SR feature will roll out as a public preview in April, giving early users a chance to test its capabilities on the ROG Xbox Ally X.
