Hot on the heels of the Xiaomi Mi 9 launch last month, Xiaomi has unveiled a budget friendlier variant named the Xiaomi Mi 9 SE.
Let’s take a quick look at the device specifications. At the heart of the device, we get the 8 core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 712 clocked in at 2.3GHz. The chipset comes with integrated Qualcomm® Adreno™ 616 GPU and is paired with 6GB of LPDDR4x RAM(also found on the Mi9). Here in Malaysia, we get 2 options for storage, either 64GB or 128GB. With the latest Snapdragon processor, Xiaomi claims it offers up to 35% improved graphics performance and power efficiency compared to its predecessor. We also get the usual WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as NFC and a USB C port at the bottom of the device for data transfer and charging the device. Xiaomi also throws in an in-screen fingerprint sensor, considering how affordable this device is, thank you Xiaomi!
On to the build of the device, we get a 5.97” AMOLED Dot Drop display (Xiaomi’s name for the notched display) with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It has a FHD+ (2340×1080) resolution with a maximum brightness of 430nits. The device measures 147.5 x 70.5 x 7.45mm which Xiaomi calls “about the size of a classic smartphone with a 5.1” display”. The Mi 9 SE comes with 2.5D Corning® Gorilla® Glass 5 and rounded display corners and it’s volume and power buttons are on the right side of the device, giving it a very clean and polished look overall. All this comes in a 155g package and is made for easy-one handed operation.
The Mi 9 SE doesn’t lack in the camera department as well. Sporting a triple camera setup, it comes with a 48MP main shooter with a Sony lens and f/1.75 aperture, a 13MP ultra wide-angle lens with f/2.4 aperture and a 8MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. The front camera is a 20MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture. The main camera and front camera is capable of combining 4 pixels to form a 1.6μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel & 1.8μm 4-in-1 Super Pixel. In layman’s terms, it allows for better low-light shots. Stay tuned to the full review for more on the camera’s performance.
Keeping the device running, we have a 3070 mAh battery. Xiaomi also provides a 18W in-box charger to help charge the device faster. Pairing this with the MIUI 10 operating system based on Android 9, we should get decent battery life out of the device. The device comes in 3 colours; Piano Black, Ocean Blue, and Lavender Violet. Though the Lavender Violet will only be available to the Malaysian market on a later date.
The Mi 9 SE will go on sale from the 4th of May 2019 for RM1299 for the 64GB variant and RM1499 for the 128GB variant. You will be able to get the device from Mi Stores, Lazada Xiaomi Flagship Stores and Shopee Mi Official Store. Xiaomi Malaysia is also throwing in a free 10000 mAh Mi Power Bank 2S for free from 4th May 2019 to 12th May 2019 in conjunction with Mother’s day.
