This MONSTROUS Gaming Monitor lets you see FAR and WIDE! Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 | Unboxing & First Impressions

When it comes to gaming monitors, I don’t think there’s anything quite as EPIC and MONSTROUS as the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 gaming monitor. And guess what? This curvy, immersive display is now available in Malaysia!

I got the chance to play around with this new beast and I can’t wait to share with you my unboxing experience and my first impressions!

.

Unboxing

Let’s start with unboxing, since the monitor is a huge 49-inch monitor, it comes with a large rectangular-shaped box.

Opening the box, you will be greeted with the Installation Guide.

Next, towards the left side, there is a clear plastic package that contains:

  • A USB 3.0 cable
  • A 3-Pin Plug
  • A DisplayPort 1.4 Cable, which can actually support up to an 8K Monitor

Next, there is:

  • the Base Monitor Stand

  • The Rear Transparent Cylinder Stand Cover, that will enhance the backlights of the monitor which I will show you how it looks later

  • Then there is the Wall Mount Bracket, in case you plan to mount it on a wall

  • A nice white-colored Rear Monitor Stand

  • And a plastic back panel to keep the ports and cables covered

Next, lifting up the following styrofoam, you will find the huge and sexy-looking monitor, with the white color finish at the back as well.

.

Assembly

Next, here is how I assemble the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Monitor.

After having the rear part of the monitor facing towards you, take the rear monitor stand and fix it at the back, where there is a little lip at the top, so ensure it gets inside and clicked and then fasten the included screw placements accordingly.

Next, split the Rear Transparent Cylinder Stand Cover into two (yes, you can do that) and fix them at the back as well by twisting it clockwise and you will feel that it clicked and locked in place.

Then finally just insert and fasten the Base Monitor Stand with the attached mechanism and you are all done!

Build & Design

If you were impressed with the previous Samsung Odyssey G9 then I think you’re gonna love this updated and upgraded Samsung Odyssey Neo G9.

While the two generations share many resemblance design-wise, this latest model comes with black borders on the front and white panels in the back

And yes, It’s still a monster through and through, measuring at 31.6 inches (80.2cm) with a depth of 12.7 inches (32.3cm) and a panel having a 1000R curve radius. This curved ultrawide screen is shaped to match the human eye for maximum immersion and also helps to minimize strain.

In terms of weight, together with the stand, it’s quite hefty and really solidly built, weighing in at 14.5kg, and speaking of the stand, there is this nice little hook built in which allows you to easily hang your headphones as well, and here is where a lot of people were complaining about the practicality of this, but let’s see if it is when I use this monitor daily.

The metal stand is sturdy and wide and does take up quite an amount of space on your desk, so keep in mind the size of the desk as I am using it with my new EVIS sit-stand desk which fits nicely on the monitor, which I will link it at the end together with my promo code discount.

But because the feet are spread far apart, you can still put stuff in the front, or you can be like me, keep it clean and minimalist as the stand really holds display well despite the screen’s large size.

At the back, you’ll find unique CoreSync backlighting as mentioned earlier, where it surrounds where the stand meets the screen. And with this Core Lighting, you can add a real personality to your setup with multiple color modes and it can even match your game’s on-screen colors as well, cool, eh?

Now, just in case you were wondering, yes, the monitor supports a standard 100 by 100 VESA mount and there is nice cable management through the stand to keep your set-up clean.

In terms of ergonomics, the display allows for maximum height adjustment of around 12cm, with a swivel range of -15 degrees to 15 degrees, and a tilt range of 15 degrees to 2.5 degrees.

So yes, during my first impressions, I would describe the overall design as futuristic and edgy, complemented with an amazing build quality.

.

Display

As for the display itself, it is a 49-inch VA panel with a 32:9 aspect ratio, with a high 5120 x 1440 resolution, which is like having two QHD monitors combined (DQHD). It features cutting-edge Mini LED backlighting, which is a big step up from the previous generation.

The panel offers a very impressive peak brightness of 2,000 nits, an excellent contrast ratio of 1 million-to-1, and 2,048 local dimming for deeper blacks with the highest 12-bit black levels. It even offers 125% sRGB gamut, 95% DCI, 92% Adobe RGB and HDR 2000.

That aside, it boasts a high 240Hz refresh rate with native FreeSync and G-SYNC compatibility. Samsung certainly didn’t hold back with this monitor’s gaming prowess as it also has low input lag and a quick response time of 1ms Gray-to-Gray (GtG).

So yes, out of the bat, I must say I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever about the quality of the display because It’s simply stunning!

.

Connectivity

As for the connectivity, Samsung has a well thought out future-proofing for the monitor, as it comes built-in with:

  • 2x HDMI 2.1 ports,
  • 1x DisplayPort 1.4 port,
  • a two-port USB3 hub,
  • 1x 3.5mm headphone jack

Unfortunately, it does not offer a Power Delivery USB-C port for charging or for display purposes and it doesn’t come with in-built speakers, so keep that in mind.

.

Software

In terms of software, I love that there’s an Auto Source Switch+ feature where the monitor detects when connected devices are turned on and instantly switches to the new source signal.

So this will certainly help to get your game action OR into productivity mode faster without having to manually flip through multiple input sources, which older monitors usually need to be done.

In addition to that, there are other very important modes such as Low Input Lag Mode, Refresh Rate Optimiser, and Super Arena Gaming UX for the enhanced gaming experience, which of course I am planning to test all of these features and my overall usage during my full review of the monitor, if you haven’t done so.

.

Conclusion

As for the price here in Malaysia, with all of that being said, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 comes with a premium price, and since the price usually changes very frequently, I will update the latest pricing of this monitor down below.

And I have to say that during my first impressions with this monitor, you are getting an aesthetically pleasing, well-built monitor that features the best display tech from Samsung and massive size of the monitor, so I would recommend a very sturdy and the right size table, which I will also link this EVIS table down below as well, as there is a promo deal going on together with the promo code that I have for y’all as well.
