In a move prioritizing guest privacy, Airbnb announced a ban on indoor security cameras in all listings globally. This update aims to simplify the platform’s policy on security devices and ensure clear expectations for both hosts and guests.
Airbnb Prioritises Guest Privacy with Indoor Security Camera Ban
Previously, Airbnb allowed disclosed cameras in common areas like hallways, but the new Airbnb policy eliminates any indoor camera use regardless of location.
“Our goal is to create clear rules for our Airbnb community,” said Juniper Downs, Airbnb’s Head of Community Policy and Partnerships. “These changes were made with extensive input from guests, hosts, and privacy experts.”
The update impacts a small percentage of the company’s listings, as most on the platform don’t report having security cameras.
Clearer Guidelines for Outdoor Security Cameras and Noise Monitors
While indoor cameras are prohibited, the revised policy offers clearer guidelines for outdoor cameras and noise monitors. Hosts can still utilize doorbell cameras and noise monitors, but they must disclose their presence and general location before a booking. These devices cannot monitor a listing’s interior and are restricted in certain private outdoor areas.
To ensure a smooth transition, the revised policy takes effect on 30th April, 2024. Following this date, reported violations will be investigated and could result in listing or account removal.
Airbnb emphasises the importance of community and expert input in shaping its policies. Consequently, these changes reflect consultations with guests, hosts, privacy experts, and advocacy groups.
