Apple Overhauls iPhone Air 2 with Lower Price and Dual Cameras After Sales Slump
Apple is reportedly returning to the drawing board for its ultra-thin iPhone Air line. Following lacklustre sales of the first-generation model, the tech giant has delayed the sequel’s release to Spring 2027 and is planning significant upgrades to win back consumers, according to new reports on the company’s product roadmap.
The device, tentatively named the iPhone Air 2 (internal codename V62), was originally slated for a Fall 2026 launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. However, sources familiar with the project indicate that trial production was abruptly cancelled last month. Apple has now shifted its target release to Spring 2027 to allow time for a critical redesign.
The strategic pivot comes as a direct response to the market’s lukewarm reception of the original iPhone Air. Critics and consumers alike panned the device for its high price tag relative to its feature set. Despite its striking design, the first model suffered from compromises that many users found hard to justify, particularly the inclusion of only a single rear camera.
To reverse this trend, Apple is reportedly planning two major changes for the second generation:
- Dual-Camera System: The redesigned chassis is expected to house a second camera lens, addressing one of the primary complaints about the original’s photography capabilities.
- Lower Price Point: Apple is considering a price cut for the new model to position it as a more attractive option between the standard and Pro lines.
Supply chain adjustments are already underway to support this new timeline. Trial production is expected to restart as early as March 2027, with Chinese manufacturer Luxshare taking the lead at its factory in Kunshan, China.
The changes to the iPhone Air are part of a massive expansion of Apple’s smartphone portfolio. Reports suggest the company aims to sell at least seven different iPhone models by late 2027, up from the current five.
While Apple has not officially commented on these plans, the delay of the iPhone Air 2 suggests the company is prioritising product fit and value over sticking to a rigid annual release cycle for its experimental models.
