This is the new Edifier QR65, and this is not your typical speaker that only plays sound, but it has awesome lights too. But is it worth the price? Well, let’s find out.
Unboxing
So, in the box, the Edifier QR65 comes with this individual stand for the speaker, and it’s cool that Edifier did that.
Next are the speakers themselves, individually wrapped in protective packaging.
Then there’s a MIDI cable to connect both speakers, an RCA to 3.5mm cable, a USB-A to USB-A cable, and the power cable.
There’s also a microfiber cloth provided to keep the speakers’ reflective panel nice and clean, just like me.
Design & Build
Let’s start with the speakers’ design and build quality. Now, this Edifier QR65 has to be one of the most attractive sets of speakers that I’ve come across.
It looks very sleek in a white and leather-like finish, and there’s also a black variant if you are not a fan of white.
The aesthetics of this reflective mirror-like panel on the front also adds a really great layer of sleekness. The QR65 also feels solid; they’re a bit on the hefty side (5.3kg), which is good. One thing to note is that the active speaker is slightly bigger in width (141.5mm vs 130mm), but the rest of the measurements are the same.
On the front of the speaker, there’s a 1.25-inch silk dome tweeter and a 2.75-inch aluminum diaphragm mid-low driver.
On the side of the active speaker, there’s a power button, as well as knobs to control the volume and brightness of the lighting effect. This is nice as it keeps the aesthetics of the overall speaker, especially at the front, very minimal.
Now, let’s look at the QR65’s backside. At the back, you’ll find a plethora of ports. The active speaker has an RCA port, a USB-A port, and a MIDI port to connect it to the passive speaker.
There’s also a sub-out port since this speaker has support for a subwoofer. Lastly, there’s a USB-A port and two USB-C ports for you to charge your devices.
Hardware
As for this speaker’s hardware, there is a 140W power output for this QR65, coupled with the included tweeter and driver set. This setup can produce bass down to a 55Hz frequency. There’s a dual TI class D digital audio amplifier, great for delivering precise two-way active crossover where it amplifies the high and mid-low frequency signals separately, enhancing the overall sound quality.
The speaker also has TurboGaN functionality, where GaN, meaning Gallium Nitride, is incredibly useful for charging your devices. It is rated at 65W, meaning that you can even charge your laptop over here.
Not only can it charge over 1,000 compatible devices, but there’s also temperature control and smart power assignment technology within this, which you can view in detail in the dedicated app.
The QR65 is housed in an MDF enclosure with independent acoustic cavities. It comes with Edifier’s patented MazeTube Bass Reflex Channels and TurbMuff Air Noise Suppression Technology.
Essentially, this means that it helps to keep the port noises, which are the air turbulences that cause rustling sounds and acoustic resonance, to the lowest level, ensuring better sound quality.
Finally, the QR65 also supports Hi-Res Audio, Hi-Res Audio Wireless, and LDAC codec. It can stream truly lossless audio up to 24bit/96kHz over Bluetooth.
Performance
The Edifier QR65 audio performance is decent. It does the job well, allowing you to enjoy your music without any major issues. However, I noticed a slight lack of clarity in the audio output, specifically on the higher and mid-range frequencies. This can be a little challenging to distinguish vocals and instruments in songs with a strong focus on these elements. It is not terrible, but it’s not really outstanding either.
The lows, though, are a different story. The speakers are surprisingly bassy, and as a person who doesn’t like too much bass in my speakers, I really love how the bass response performs in this particular speaker.
Now, typically when it comes to music listening with this whole lighting effect, one would probably listen to EDM first to test out the speakers. But I decided to start off with some metal tracks like “Happy Song” from Bring Me The Horizon and “Scream” by Avenged Sevenfold. The whole experience was totally enjoyable.
Since the speaker is all about the bass, I switch to “Return of the Jedi” from Darth & Vader and Tiesto’s “The Motto”. Here’s where I can really appreciate the speaker audio a little more.
And just to get that extra feel, I turn off all the lights in the studio while listening to the speakers with the RGB light turned on. Yes, it felt like a club for a moment.
This impressive low-frequency performance adds a very nice touch to activities like watching movies or TV shows. It’s like stepping into a whole new world of entertainment, and I was totally hooked the other day while watching “Berlin” on Netflix, which is a fantastic show, by the way. The action scenes had this extra punch, making the whole experience even more immersive with this whole lighting experience.
Gaming on this QR65 also provides a similar experience. Sound performance is great and grants you total immersion in the game. I had a great time playing “Batman: The Telltale Series” the other day. Although I’m more of a fan of the Joker, but yeah, whenever Batman hits the punch and the kicks, I almost feel every single punch and kick in the game.
Lighting
Alright, let’s talk about the real MVP of the show – the RGB lighting effects. These lights bring a whole new vibe with a bunch of cool effects to choose from. Now, my absolute go-to is the “Magnetic” effect where this is when the lights dance in sync with your music or movie you’ve got playing. It’s like having your own personal light show, hence the whole clubbing feel as mentioned earlier.
Now, the brightness of these lighting effects can be toggled through the knob at the side of the speaker or through the Edifier ConneX app, which is a totally different app than the regular Edifier Connect app, so keep that in mind.
This Edifier ConneX app is specifically made for the QR65 and is only compatible with these speakers and the Edifier Neobuds Pro 2. Speaking of which, check out that video over here.
And if you’re not into the whole RGB lights, you can turn it all the way down or just turn it off altogether. But then again, why would you get the speaker if you don’t like the lights, right?
Speaking of the app, you can access a lot of settings for the QR65, including things like the input source, sound effects for preset EQs with up to 4 different audio profile presets, and an additional custom profile.
There’s also Light Effects tab which allows you to choose your own effects, and you can choose up to 16 million color combinations.
Another very interesting feature within the app is, of course, the fast-charging tab. This shows you which devices are connected to the QR65 and what the power and output measurements are. Nice!
Conclusion
In conclusion, if you are set for speakers that not only sound decent but have a killer aesthetic that outshines the competition, then this Edifier QR65 is the one that you should consider.
But if you’re more of an audiophile or someone who wants a speaker that really fills up a room, then this may not be your choice.
Keep in mind that this speaker’s main feature is not to be really an audio heavyweight but something that would complement the overall aesthetics of your desk setup or your overall music listening from an aesthetic point of view. The build quality is fantastic, and the leather-like finish was just *chef’s kiss*
Now, about the price. I will leave the latest pricing down below since Edifier is known to have their frequently great discounts and sales on this particular speaker for you to get the speaker at a very good price.
