Google to Power Future Pixel Watches with Custom Tensor Chip
In a strategic move to bolster its wearable device offerings, Google might introduce a custom-designed Tensor chipset for its upcoming Pixel Watch 5. This development marks a significant step towards greater hardware and software integration, promising enhanced performance and efficiency.
A Dedicated Wearable Chip
According to recent insights from Google’s gChips division, the tech giant is actively developing a new chip codenamed “NPT,” anticipated for a 2026 release. This dedicated chipset will be paired with the Pixel Watch 5, optimising its performance and power consumption.
The chip’s core configuration includes one Arm Cortex-A78 core and two Arm Cortex-A55 cores. This setup is designed to balance performance with energy efficiency. Although the use of older CPU cores may seem unusual, it follows an industry trend. Leveraging established architectures on advanced process nodes often results in better power efficiency.
The Future of Pixel Watch
By developing its own wearable chipset, Google aims to gain greater control over the performance, power consumption, and feature set of its Pixel Watch devices. This strategic move could pave the way for innovative features, extended battery life, and a superior user experience.
