Live Images Reveal Leica Leitzphone Powered by Xiaomi Ahead of Launch

Xiaomi’s Leica Leitzphone Emerges Ahead of Global Launch

TL;DR: Xiaomi’s upcoming 17 Ultra Leica Edition will launch globally under a new name: Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi. Live images confirm subtle design changes ahead of the official global launch.

Just days before the global unveiling of the Xiaomi 17 series, a major naming twist has surfaced. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition will reportedly launch outside China under a different name: Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi.

Yes, that’s the official branding.

The device was recently spotted in live images circulating online, confirming earlier speculation that Xiaomi would adjust the naming strategy for international markets.

Despite the familiar naming, this new Leica Leitzphone should not be confused with the Japan-exclusive Leitz Phone series developed by Sharp Corporation. Those devices were separate collaborations and limited to the Japanese market.

This time, the branding clearly states “powered by Xiaomi,” reinforcing that the hardware platform remains part of Xiaomi’s flagship lineup.

Live images suggest the global Leica Leitzphone variant will feature slight cosmetic differences compared to the Chinese Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica Edition.

Most notably, the black version appears to adopt a uniform rear finish instead of the two-tone design seen on the China model. The Leica logo on the back is rotated 90 degrees, and the Leica branding inside the circular camera module follows the same orientation shift.

The large circular camera island remains the visual centrepiece. Surrounding it is the mechanical rotating ring, which appears unchanged in design and function. As with the Chinese model, the ring is expected to allow quick manual adjustments to focal length, exposure and white balance, reinforcing the device’s photography-first positioning.

Here’s the interesting part. By renaming the device to Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi, Xiaomi is leaning even harder into Leica’s branding for global markets. It positions the phone less as a Xiaomi flagship with Leica tuning, and more as a Leica-branded photography device built on Xiaomi’s platform.

With the global Xiaomi 17 series launch just around the corner, including the standard Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra, this name change signals a deliberate marketing shift aimed at photography enthusiasts who recognise the Leica name instantly.

More official details, including full specifications and global pricing, are expected at the upcoming launch event.
