Malaysia has taken a significant step towards becoming a regional leader in artificial intelligence (AI). This was achieved through a new partnership between tech giant NVIDIA and YTL, a Malaysian conglomerate.
According to a statement by the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Tengku Zafrul, the partnership will involve a total investment of RM20 billion. Additionally, he confirmed a RM4.3 billion (USD1 billion) first phase of the NVIDIA-YTL partnership. This phase is scheduled to be completed by June 2024. Furthermore, it will include establishing the “fastest supercomputer” in Malaysia.
Which NVIDIA Supercomputer is coming?
We believe this supercomputer could be the NVIDIA DGX H200; however, the exact model wasn’t mentioned. The DGX H200 was previously announced at Computex 2023 and is powered by the NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips and the NVLink Switch System. This aligns with the government’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) to make Malaysia a “cloud-first nation” by 2030.
Furthermore, the government is collaborating with NVIDIA and YTL to strengthen the country’s AI ecosystem through the creation of a new Centre of Excellence (COE). This centre will focus on research and development (R&D) initiatives, aiming to foster innovation and talent development in the field of AI.
The partnership marks a significant development for Malaysia’s technological ambitions. It also positions the country at the forefront of AI advancement in Southeast Asia.
