Government Prioritises Safe and Responsible AI Development
The Malaysian government announced the upcoming release of the National Artificial Intelligence Governance and Code of Ethics Guidelines. Developed collaboratively by the Digital Ministry and the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry, these guidelines aim to promote the safe, reliable, and ethical use of AI in the country.
This announcement comes in response to a question raised by Young Syefura Othman, a member of parliament, regarding the government’s plan to regulate the growing use of AI technologies.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo acknowledged the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence and emphasised the government’s support for research and development efforts in this field. He highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering technological advancement and skill development among Malaysians.
While specific regulations are not currently planned, the National Guidelines will serve as a framework for responsible AI development and implementation.
Progress on Public Sector Digitalization Plan
The Minister also provided an update on the Public Sector Digitalization Strategic Plan (PSPSA) 2021-2025. The plan has achieved an overall progress of 67.71%. Core 7, which focuses on the adoption of new technologies, has reached 47.33% completion. These technologies include AI.
Looking ahead, the government intends to prioritise AI initiatives in the remaining years of the PSPSA and beyond. This suggests that Artificial Intelligence will play a key role in the development of smart government services in Malaysia.
