The rumours surrounding Nintendo’s next-generation console, the Switch 2, have been swirling for months. While Nintendo itself remains tight-lipped, its legal team has been quite active, taking aim at both emulator developers and now, a third-party accessory maker.
Last week, Genki, a company known for its mobile gaming accessories, showcased a physical mockup of the rumoured Switch 2 at CES. This sparked significant media attention, with many outlets reporting on the device’s potential design based on the mockup.
Nintendo Lawyers Target Genki Over Switch 2 Mockup, Despite Lack of NDA
According to French journalist Julien Tellouck, Nintendo’s lawyers visited Genki’s booth at CES, raising concerns about the display. While the mockup wasn’t publicly displayed, Genki allowed visitors to test its accessories on the device. Furthermore, a rendered video on Genki’s website offers a detailed look at the alleged Switch 2 design.
Despite the legal scrutiny, Genki maintains that it has not violated any agreements with Nintendo, as it did not sign any Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) with the company. This seems to be a recurring theme in the Switch 2 leak saga, as other companies like dbrand have also shared information without facing legal repercussions due to the lack of NDAs.
In an interview with CNET Japan, Nintendo acknowledged that Genki’s mockup was based on a design acquired by the company independently. While Nintendo stated that the design was unofficial and not provided by them, they refrained from making any further accusations.
Despite the legal inquiries, Genki remains confident in the accuracy of its mockup. A company representative told Tellouck that they believe the final Switch 2 design will closely resemble their model. This aligns with previous leaks, which have pointed towards a larger screen, magnetic Joy-Cons, a second USB-C port, and a mysterious new “C” button on the right Joy-Con.
While these leaks offer tantalising glimpses of what the Switch 2 might be, nothing is certain until Nintendo officially unveils the console. With a March 31st, 2025 deadline for the announcement, we may not have to wait much longer to see if these rumours and mockups hold water.
