Nothing OS 4.0: Android 16 Meets AI-Built Apps and “Live” Glyphs
Nothing has kicked off the rollout of Nothing OS 4.0, a major update powered by Android 16 that fundamentally rethinks how users interact with their devices. Described as a “refined, connected, and intelligent framework,” the update blends Nothing’s signature minimalist aesthetic with powerful new utility.
Here is what you need to know about the rollout, which began reaching Nothing Phone (3) users on 24 November.
“Text-to-App” Creation
The standout feature of Nothing OS 4.0 is Nothing Playground, which creates a new paradigm for mobile personalisation. Using the new Widget Builder, users can simply describe a tool they need, and onboard AI will construct a functional “Essential App” widget instantly. These live in the new Widget Drawer, effectively turning the home screen into a personalised canvas where software adapts to the user, not the other way around.
Glyphs Go Live
The Glyph Interface is no longer just for notifications. Leveraging Android 16’s Live Updates, the lights on the back of the phone now mirror real-time lock screen data, think ride-sharing progress or delivery timers, without waking the screen. Crucially, this support is now system-level, meaning any app supporting Android 16 Live Updates automatically works with Nothing’s Glyph Progress.
Darker, Smoother, Tactile
Aesthetics and feel get a significant overhaul:
- Extra Dark Mode: A new high-contrast mode deepens blacks across the system and apps like Launcher, saving battery and reducing eye strain.
- Tactile Haptics: Adjusting volume now provides subtle physical feedback at max/min levels, allowing for “eyes-free” control.
- Fluid Motion: App transitions and notification shades now feature “weight and rebound” animations, adding a premium sense of depth to every swipe.
Power User Tools
Multitasking gets a boost with Pop-up View, allowing two floating apps to be active simultaneously with intuitive gesture controls. For the privacy-conscious, Hidden Icons lets users vanish apps from the drawer while keeping them accessible via a secret swipe. The update also adds versatile 1×1 and 2×1 widget sizes for denser, information-rich layouts.
Availability and Exclusives
The Nothing OS 4.0 update is currently rolling out to Phone (3) users, who also get exclusive “Glyph Toys” (Hourglass, Lunar Cycle) and high-res “Glyph Mirror Selfies.” Nothing confirmed that the OS will expand to older Nothing and CMF devices soon.
