OpenAI and Jony Ive’s “Calm” Hardware Expected by 2027
The highly anticipated collaboration between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and design legend Jony Ive has a timeline: the duo expects to launch their first AI hardware device by 2027. Speaking at the Emerson Collective’s Demo Day, they confirmed the existence of a finalised prototype that Altman has already begun “living with” at home.
The project is the result of OpenAI’s massive USD6.5 billion equity acquisition of io, the startup founded by Ive. The device is positioned not just as a gadget, but as a philosophical corrective to the modern smartphone era.
“Times Square” vs. “A Cabin by the Lake”

The driving force behind the device is a desire to escape the “indignities” of the current tech landscape. Altman likened the modern smartphone experience to walking through a chaotic Times Square; noisy, distracting, and demanding.
In contrast, the new OpenAI hardware is designed to evoke the feeling of “sitting in the most beautiful cabin by a lake.” It aims to be an ambient companion that utilises deep context to filter out digital noise, allowing users to remain present rather than glued to a screen.
A Design You Can Use “Carelessly”
Jony Ive, the mind behind the iPhone’s defining aesthetics, described the new prototype as “almost naïve in its simplicity.” His goal is to create an object so intuitive that it can be used “almost carelessly,” dissolving the friction between the user and the tool.
The design is reportedly so tactile and inviting that it passed a unique litmus test for Altman: “I want to pick up that thing and take a bite out of it.”
The Roadmap
With the prototype settled, the team, bolstered by former Apple veterans from the io acquisition, is moving toward production. While Ive confirmed the launch would happen in “less than two years,” pointing to a 2027 release, the stakes are immediate. OpenAI is racing to define the physical shape of AI before competitors like Google and Meta can claim the territory.
