OpenAI Might be Launching Their Own Pair of Earphones
OpenAI is reportedly preparing to enter the consumer hardware market later this year. New leaks suggest the AI giant is developing a pair of earbuds with a radical design, aiming to compete directly with Apple’s premium audio products.
According to a report by Android Authority citing tipster Smart Pikachu, the project is codenamed “Sweetpea.” The device is described as having a “unique, unseen before” aesthetic. The main unit reportedly resembles a metal “eggstone,” while the earbuds themselves are pill-shaped devices designed to rest behind the ear.
The leak indicates that the design involves former Apple design chief Jony Ive’s team. The earbuds are rumoured to use a cutting-edge 2nm chip, potentially an Exynos variant, which would rival processors found in high-end smartphones.
The report suggests the device is built to “replace iPhone actions by commanding Siri,” hinting at deep AI integration that attempts to bypass traditional voice assistant limitations to perform tasks more autonomously.
The bill of materials (BOM) is rumoured to rival that of a flagship smartphone, suggesting a very high retail price. Despite the potential cost, the leak claims OpenAI has ambitious volume projections for its first year.
The earbuds are reportedly just one of five hardware products OpenAI is developing in partnership with manufacturer Foxconn, with a roadmap extending to 2028. Other potential devices mentioned in the report include a smart home device and a digital pen.
The device is tentatively targeted for a September release.
