PS5 Pro Gets Confirmed: Developers Told to Optimize Games for More Powerful Hardware

The Ps5 Pro is real. According to a new report by The Verge, rumours of a mid-generation upgrade for the PS5 are not only true, but Sony is actively preparing developers for the new hardware.

The report claims Sony is requesting developers to optimise their games for the Pro console by summer. The focus seems to be on improving ray tracing capabilities in existing and upcoming PS5 titles. Similar to Microsoft’s approach with the Xbox Series X, The Verge suggests a “Trinity Enhanced” label will be available for games that showcase significant enhancements on the PS5 Pro.

Last month, leaked specifications for the PS5 Pro detailed the hardware upgrades. The CPU remains largely unchanged from the base PS5 but will have a “High CPU Frequency Mode” for a 10% performance boost. The GPU also receives an upgrade, promising faster rendering and improved ray tracing.

The most intriguing addition is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), a technology akin to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. PSSR essentially upscales visuals without demanding significant extra processing power. This could be crucial as experts predict even a PS5 Pro might struggle to run highly anticipated titles like GTA 6 at a smooth 60 frames per second.

While Sony hasn’t officially announced the PS5 refresh or its release date, analysts suggest a late 2024 launch is likely.
