Sony might be gearing up for another hardware refresh just three years after launching the PlayStation 5. Following a downward revision in PS5 sales forecast, analysts predict a “souped-up” PlayStation 5 Pro arriving in the latter half of 2024.
PlayStation 5 Pro coming in 2024?
This potential move aims to reignite interest in the console and cater to the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI in 2025. Historically, Sony has released “Pro” versions of its consoles roughly three years after launch, as seen with the PlayStation 4.
Industry experts seem confident in a PS5 Pro release, highlighting comments from Serkan Toto, CEO of Kantan Games consultancy: “There’s a broad consensus… that Sony is preparing a PS5 Pro launch in the second half of 2024.” He further emphasizes the strategic timing, aligning with the expected 2025 release of GTA VI, “a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry.”
While Sony hasn’t officially confirmed anything, they did introduce a slightly upgraded PS5 model and a handheld console (PlayStation Portal) last year. However, the PS5 Pro is expected to be a significantly more substantial upgrade.
This potential launch comes amidst concerns about Sony’s gaming business profits, currently at near decade-lows. Analysts like George Jijiashvili of Omdia speculate that Sony might prioritize profit margins, potentially avoiding a price cut for the current PS5 unlike previous console transitions. This could mean declining hardware sales even with a PS5 Pro launch.
Only time will tell if the rumours are true. However, one thing’s for sure: gamers are eagerly awaiting any official news from Sony regarding the future of the PlayStation 5.
