Chinese tech giant Meizu has made a major pivot, announcing its exit from the smartphone market to focus entirely on artificial intelligence (AI). This bold move signals the company’s belief that AI is the future of technology, echoing its past decisions to shift focus from successful MP3 players to smartphones early on.
No more Meizu smartphones?
“The decision to move away from smartphones resonates with Meizu’s history,” said CEO Shen Ziyu. “We’ve always embraced embracing innovative technology, and after two years of preparation, we’re ready to fully dive into the world of AI.”
This commitment involves several exciting endeavours. Firstly, Meizu plans to launch a brand new mobile operating system specifically designed for the AI era in 2024. Secondly, the company is slated to unveil its first AI-powered hardware product later this year.
Despite this shift, Meizu assures existing customers that support for their current smartphones and services remains unchanged. They will continue to enjoy access to offline stores throughout China.
Industry experts seem to applaud this move. Li Nan, the company’s for executive, commends the company’s courage to adapt, claiming that “AI features in other brands’ smartphones are just gimmicks.” He believes Meizu’s dedication to pure AI holds immense potential. Furthermore, Meizu promises “Open All Hardware For AI LLM,” suggesting even more future developments in this area. This openness could potentially attract collaborators and accelerate the company’s AI journey.
Only time will tell if Meizu’s audacious decision will pay off. However, their track record of embracing emerging technologies and Li Nan’s endorsement suggest an exciting future lies ahead for the AI-powered Meizu.
