Samsung Debuts AI-Driven Galaxy XR Headset, Featuring Deep Integration of Android XR and Gemini Live

Samsung and Google Launch Galaxy XR Headset, Debut Android XR Platform

Samsung and Google have formally unveiled the long-awaited “Project Moohan”, officially named Galaxy XR. The device, priced at USD1,799 (approximately RM7,599), serves as the inaugural platform for Android XR, Google’s new operating system specifically developed for immersive computing. The collaboration represents a major effort to deliver a unified experience that deeply integrates artificial intelligence with spatial awareness.

Central to the Galaxy XR’s architecture is Gemini Live, Google’s advanced AI assistant. This integration allows Gemini to be contextually aware of the user’s physical surroundings and ongoing activities within the spatial environment. The headset aims to unify personal computing, entertainment, and augmented reality interactions.

The Android XR Ecosystem

The Android XR operating system is engineered to facilitate a “passthrough” mode, blending digital interfaces seamlessly with the user’s real-world environment. Interaction is designed to be hands-free, relying on voice commands, sophisticated hand gestures, and eye tracking for navigation.

Google’s VP & GM of XR, Shahram Izadi, emphasised the headset’s ability to project an expansive “infinite screen” populated by the Android ecosystem. The content strategy is multifaceted:

  • Optimised Google Services: Core applications, including Google Maps, YouTube, Google Photos, and Chrome, have been redesigned and optimised for the unique XR environment.
  • Legacy Application Support: The system can run millions of existing mobile and tablet applications, displayed on virtual screens within the spatial workspace.
  • Dedicated Launch Content: The release is supported by over 50 new immersive applications and experiences from key partners, notably Adobe, Fox Sports, and Owlchemy Labs.

The seamless embedding of Gemini Live is positioned as a key differentiator. The AI assistant leverages Galaxy XR’s environmental data to offer real-time, context-specific assistance across a variety of use cases:

  • Entertainment and Media (Room Conversion): The system’s spatial awareness allows it to transform the user’s physical room into a private, large-scale theatre environment for content consumption via Google TV and immersive YouTube videos. Furthermore, it introduces a feature within Google Photos to convert standard 2D photos and videos into a simulated 3D viewing experience, effectively allowing users to “step back into” memories.
  • Real-World Search: The headset incorporates the Circle to Search gesture, which is extended to function on both digital content and real-world objects visible through the passthrough cameras, providing immediate web-based information.
  • Productivity and Workspace (Spatial Conversion): The Galaxy XR converts the physical space into a large virtual workspace, enabling users to arrange and resize multiple simultaneous applications, such as Chrome windows and Google Meet video tiles. Gemini can also manage this environment, instantly optimising the layout of application windows via simple voice commands.

Pricing and Availability Strategy

The Samsung Galaxy XR is now commercially available. The initial launch is strictly focused on the United States and South Korea, reflecting a limited release strategy often employed for new hardware platforms.

To spur early adoption in these markets, the companies are offering an “Explorer Pack,” which bundles 12 months of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, and access to premium content.

While there are no confirmed dates for availability in other global markets, we can anticipate that a broader rollout across Europe and Asia will likely follow before early 2026. This phased release allows Samsung to gauge market reaction and scale production before a larger international push.
