Samsung unveiled its latest foldable smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6, at its Unpacked event yesterday. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s new with Samsung’s new foldable smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6
The Z Fold6 comes with a significant design overhaul. It features a boxier design with a wider 6.3-inch external display for improved one-handed use. The internal screen remains 7.6 inches but gains some width for a more immersive experience. While S Pen support continues, it still lacks built-in storage. Durability is improved this year with the phone achieving an IP48 dust and water resistance rating.
Beyond design, the Z Fold6 shines with its unique AI features tailored for foldable phones. These include real-time translation during conversations displayed on the external screen (Interpreter Mode), transforming sketches into full drawings with AI assistance (Sketch to Image), and creating 3D avatars or adding objects to photos for social media (Portrait Studio). The phone is also equipped with AI-powered writing assistance for emails and social media posts (Composer Mode), and its Circle Search feature is now enhanced to answer maths questions.
On the performance side, the Z Fold6 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with 12GB of RAM, continuing the existing partnership between Samsung and Qualcomm. Both parties are still very much dedicated in bringing AI experiences to more consumers across more mobile devices.
Storage options go up to 1TB, but the 4,400mAh battery with only 25W charging feels outdated for a high-end 2024 device. The camera system retains the 50MP main sensor, 12MP ultrawide lens, and 3x optical zoom telephoto lens from its predecessor. The under-display selfie camera remains at 4MP.
Samsung Galazy Z Flip6
The Galaxy Z Flip6 takes a more refined approach compared to its predecessor. It maintains the same overall design. The cover screen can now support more apps. This allows for greater functionality without opening the phone. It also finally gains an IP48 dust and water resistance rating.
Internally, the Z Flip6 upgrades to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with 12GB of RAM, while the 8GB RAM option is dropped. Storage goes up to 512GB, and the battery capacity increases to 4,000mAh. However, 25W charging remains the standard. The camera system sees a noteworthy improvement with a new 50MP main sensor replacing the previous 12MP sensor. The 12MP ultrawide sensor and 10MP selfie camera are carried over from the Z Flip5. The metal frame surrounding the camera now matches the phone’s body colour.
It’s important to note that these improvements are complemented by the Galaxy AI features. Unlike the Z Flip5, the Z Flip6 can leverage the cover screen for real-time translation conversations with Interpreter Mode. This makes communication with foreign speakers significantly smoother. Additionally, the AI Zoom feature ensures perfectly framed selfies even when using the superior rear cameras in Flex Mode, a common challenge on foldable phones.
