Samsung Reportedly Developing a Double-Folding Smartphone, Dubbed the “Galaxy G Fold”

Samsung is gearing up to redefine the foldable smartphone market with the anticipated release of a new “double-folding” device, reportedly called the “Samsung Galaxy G Fold”. The new foldable device is slated to debut alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 family in 2025. According to a report from ETNews, the company has secured the necessary parts for its innovative multi-fold phone, signalling a significant leap in foldable technology.

This new device will feature a “multi-fold” functionality, making it distinct from the single-fold designs of the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series. Specifically, the Z Fold folds horizontally, while the Z Flip folds vertically. However, the double-folding model will introduce a more complex mechanism. In fact, it may closely resemble the “Flex G” prototype previously showcased by Samsung Display.

Industry sources indicate that the development and production of the double-folding phone are proceeding in parallel with the Z series, suggesting a simultaneous launch. This move aims to further differentiate Samsung’s foldable offerings in a market where competitors like Huawei are exploring tri-fold designs.

Display Specifications

The double-folding device will feature an “in-folding” structure, meaning the screen folds inwards. This necessitates a separate external display. Reports suggest that the internal display will measure 9.96 inches, while the external display will be 6.49 inches. Moreover, these dimensions align with the expected size of the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s display.

Digitiser Omission and Device Thickness

Notably, the double-folding phone will reportedly forego a digitiser, the component enabling pen input. This decision is expected to contribute to a thinner profile, albeit still thicker than standard foldables when fully folded. Samsung’s decision to omit the digitiser, previously featured in models like the Galaxy Z Fold 3, aims to streamline the device’s design.

Production Volume and Market Strategy

Samsung is planning an initial production run of approximately 200,000 units for the double-folding phone. This limited production is likely intended to gauge consumer response to the novel design and functionality.
