Rumours are swirling about the future of PlayStation. A reputable tipster has suggested that Sony is developing two separate SoCs for its upcoming console. Though the PlayStation 6 is still a few years away, speculation about its features and release date has already started. The latest claim comes from KeplerL2, who states that Sony is working on two different System on a Chip (SoC) designs for the next-gen console.
According to the tipster, one of these SoCs could be used for the full-fledged PlayStation 6 console, while the other might be intended for a new PlayStation handheld. This dual-SoC strategy could potentially lead to a range of console options, similar to the Xbox Series X|S.
While KeplerL2 didn’t provide any concrete details, the rumour has sparked significant interest among gamers. Some speculate that the second SoC could be used for a “slim” version of the PlayStation 6, offered at a lower price point. Others wonder if Sony might be exploring a handheld console to compete with the Nintendo Switch.
AMD Powering the PlayStation 6
Sony has already confirmed that its next-gen console will be powered by an AMD processor. The Japanese tech giant negotiated with both Intel and AMD for the PS6 chip. In the end, AMD secured the contract in 2022. Intel reportedly withdrew due to disagreements over profit sharing. Another challenge for Intel was implementing backward compatibility with previous PlayStation generations.
As we await more concrete information about the PlayStation 6, Sony has recently unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro. This upgraded version of the PS5 is priced at USD700 and will be available for pre-order on the 26th of September, with a launch date set for the 7th of November.
