Spotify HiFi Tier: Coming Soon, But at a Cost
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek says the streaming service is still in the “early days” of its plans to bring hi-fi support to the platform. During the company’s earnings call on Tuesday, the executive offered details about an upcoming deluxe tier.
Announced back in 2021, the Hi-Fi tier promised to deliver CD-quality audio streaming, a feature already offered by competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music at no extra cost. Despite the delay, Ek remains optimistic about the tier’s potential, describing it as a “deluxe version” of Spotify that will offer superior sound quality, enhanced control, and additional undisclosed features.
The new tier is expected to cost around USD17 or USD18 (~RM84) per month, a significant increase from the current premium subscription. Spotify believes that a substantial portion of its 246 million subscribers are willing to pay extra for a more immersive listening experience and greater flexibility.
While the delay in launching Hi-Fi has raised eyebrows, Spotify is likely aiming to package the tier with enough value to justify the price premium. As the competition heats up in the streaming market, the company will need to deliver a compelling proposition to entice users to upgrade.
With no official release date yet, music enthusiasts will have to wait and see if Spotify’s Hi-Fi tier lives up to the hype.
