WhatsApp is reportedly cooking up a feature that could give Apple’s AirDrop a run for its money. Codenamed “Nearby Share,” the feature is designed to allow users to effortlessly transfer photos, videos, and documents to nearby devices without relying on an internet connection.
While initially planned for Android, it seems WhatsApp is expanding the feature to iOS as well. Recent discoveries by WABetaInfo in the WhatsApp beta for iOS suggest that users might soon be able to share files with nearby contacts, similar to AirDrop.
Nearby Share: A Bridge Between Platforms
One of the most enticing aspects of Nearby Share is its potential to bridge the gap between Android and iOS users. Unlike AirDrop, which is exclusive to Apple devices, WhatsApp’s feature aims to enable seamless file sharing across different operating systems. This could be a game-changer for many who’ve faced frustrations when trying to transfer files between Android and iPhone.
However, there’s a catch. While Android users will be able to easily discover nearby devices, iOS users might need to scan a QR code to initiate file transfers.
Still in the Works
It’s important to note that Nearby Share is still under development, and there’s no official word on a release date. For now, WhatsApp users will have to patiently wait for this potentially game-changing feature to arrive.
