Transsion Holdings, Maker of Infinix and Tecno, Hit with Lawsuit by Qualcomm

Transsion Accused of Using Technology Without Proper Licensing

Qualcomm, a leading chip designer, has filed a lawsuit against Transsion Holdings, the world’s fourth-largest smartphone manufacturer, for allegedly violating its intellectual property rights. Transsion owns popular budget phone brands like Tecno, Infinix, and iTel.

The lawsuit, filed in India earlier this week, centers around Transsion’s refusal to license Qualcomm’s patents for most of its mobile devices. Ann Chaplin, Qualcomm’s general counsel, stated the lawsuit aims to “protect our patent rights and help restore a level playing field for all our licensees.” It’s important to note that Transsion primarily uses MediaTek processors instead of Qualcomm’s chips in its smartphones.

Qualcomm has also filed similar claims against the company in Europe and China.

Transsion, in response, expressed respect for intellectual property rights and willingness to negotiate licensing agreements. They highlighted an existing licensing agreement for 5G standard patents with Qualcomm and emphasised their commitment to fulfilling it.

This isn’t Transsion’s first brush with intellectual property lawsuits. According to reports, Huawei sued them in China for IP violations in 2019, and Philips filed a similar lawsuit in India earlier this year.
