It seems not too long ago that news got around that Sony Mobile was withdrawing from Southeast Asia. But you just can’t keep a phone maker down because they are back once again with the highly anticipated Xperia 1.
In true Sony fashion, the Xperia 1 is a device that exudes a no-compromise design and high-end features that attract those who want the very best. Announced during Mobile World Congress 2019, the Xperia 1’s claim to face is it’s unusual 6.5-inch 21:9 CinemaWide 4K HDR OLED display panel. That certainly is a mouthful but all you need to know it is a darn good looking screen.
That is not all, you also get the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Yes, you can expand it further with a microSD card.
Camera-wise, you get a triple camera array with the main camera, telephoto and ultra-wide camera. All three cameras boast 12-Megapixel sensors. What makes this camera unique is Sony’s Eye AF (Autofocus) that is carried down from its mirrorless cameras. Not forgetting selfie lovers, there is an 8-Megapixel camera in front.
Inside, it has a rather modest 3,300mAh battery that is charged via a USB C port. Sadly, there is no headphone jack on this device.
Priced at RM4,299 the Xperia 1 definitely sits among the upper echelon of smartphones. It has a lengthy pre-order period running from 24 August until 6 October. But it is strange considering that it is going head to head with devices like the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+, given that brand equity has diminished significantly. Honestly, would you be confident buying this if local support was questionable?
Whatever your thoughts are, there is no denying that Sony is trying to make this an attractive phone for its fanbase. Those who pre-order the phone will get Sony’s coveted Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) headphones the WH-1000X M3. That is a pretty sweet deal if you are looking for a pair of wireless headphones and one that is definitely among the best.
That being said, this offer will only last so long as stocks last.
So what will it be? Are you tempted to get a Sony Xperia 1?
