Samsung Electronics has announced two new microSD cards that push the boundaries of mobile storage. The headline grabber is the industry’s first SD Express microSD card, offering blazing-fast speeds that rival solid-state drives (SSDs). Alongside it comes a massive 1TB UHS-1 microSD card, boasting unprecedented storage capacity in a tiny form factor.
SD Express microSD Card: Performance Powerhouse
Developed in collaboration with a customer, Samsung’s SD Express microSD card breaks new ground with its high-performance design. Utilizing the SD Express interface, it achieves sequential read speeds of up to 800 megabytes per second (MB/s). This translates to:
- 1.4x faster than SATA SSDs (up to 560 MB/s)
- Over 4x faster than traditional UHS-1 microSD cards (up to 200 MB/s)
This exceptional speed promises smoother performance for demanding applications on mobile devices and PCs. Samsung has also incorporated Dynamic Thermal Guard (DTG) technology to ensure the card stays cool even under heavy use, maintaining stability and reliability.
1TB UHS-1 microSD Card: Unmatched Storage
The second offering is a monster 1TB UHS-1 microSD card. Samsung achieves this remarkable feat by stacking eight layers of their latest 8th generation V-NAND technology within the compact microSD design. This innovation brings high-capacity storage, previously only available in SSDs, to the mobile world.
The 1TB card is built to endure, passing rigorous testing for water resistance, extreme temperatures, drops, wear-out, X-rays, and magnetism.
Availability
The 256GB SD Express card is expected to hit shelves later this year, while the 1TB UHS-1 card is slated for a Q3 2024 launch. For more information on the new Samsung cards, you can head over to the official Samsung website here.
