The Spirit of Xperia Play Returns: AYANEO Pocket Play Gaming Phone Unveiled
The dream of a modern PlayStation phone is alive again. Handheld PC manufacturer AYANEO has officially lifted the veil on its latest project, the AYANEO Pocket Play, a dedicated gaming smartphone that channels the design philosophy of the cult-classic Sony Ericsson Xperia Play from 2011.
While the device’s full technical specifications remain under wraps, the company has launched a Kickstarter pre-launch page, giving us a clear look at its sliding form factor and control layout.
A “Spiritual Successor” in Design

For over a decade, mobile gaming enthusiasts have clamoured for a true successor to the Xperia Play, a phone with a slide-out gamepad that eliminates the need for Bluetooth controllers or clunky telescoping grips. The AYANEO Pocket Play appears to answer that specific prayer.
The device features a portrait-oriented smartphone form factor that looks deceptively standard at a glance. However, the screen slides upward to reveal a hidden, integrated gamepad nestled underneath. This mechanism allows the device to function as a regular phone for daily tasks and a dedicated gaming handheld at a moment’s notice.
The Controls: Touchpads over Joysticks

The most distinct, and perhaps controversial, design choice revealed so far is the control scheme. The slide-out tray features:
- A classic D-Pad on the left.
- Standard ABXY face buttons on the right.
- Shoulder buttons integrated into the device’s edge/chassis.
- Two circular touchpads in the centre replace traditional analogue sticks.
This touchpad implementation mirrors the original Xperia Play’s design but features modern “Dual-Mode” technology, allowing it to function as either virtual joysticks or mouse-like trackpads. While this keeps the device slim and pocketable (avoiding the “bulge” of physical sticks), it remains to be seen how they will perform for precision-heavy titles like first-person shooters.

Currently, AYANEO is playing its cards close to the chest regarding internals. The Kickstarter page and teaser materials have omitted key specifications, including:
- Processor: (Likely a high-end Snapdragon chip given AYANEO’s history, but unconfirmed).
- RAM/Storage configurations.
- Screen resolution and refresh rate.
- Battery capacity.
Given AYANEO’s track record with high-performance handhelds like the Pocket S, expectations are high for flagship-level performance, though this will likely come with a premium price tag.
A Niche Reawakened?
The AYANEO Pocket Play arrives at an interesting time. While the “gaming phone” market is dominated by devices like the ASUS ROG Phone and RedMagic (which rely on touch triggers and cooling fans), none have committed to physical face buttons since the Xperia Play.
By combining the “daily driver” utility of a phone with the tactile controls of a retro handheld, AYANEO is attempting to carve out a unique niche. However, its success will likely hinge on two factors: the tactile quality of those sliding controls and whether the battery life can sustain both a phone and a gaming console in one chassis.
The AYANEO Pocket Play is listed as “Coming Soon” on Kickstarter. No release date or pricing has been announced.
