Xiaomi 17 Air Prototype Leak Shows Cancelled Ultra-Thin Design

Xiaomi 17 Air Leak Offers Glimpse of a Cancelled Flagship

A glimpse of Xiaomi’s once-planned ultra-thin flagship, the Xiaomi 17 Air, has surfaced online, though the device will reportedly never see a commercial release. The leak, shared by tipster Bald Panda, shows an early engineering mould that hints at Xiaomi’s experiments with extreme slimness, measuring just 5.5mm thick, slightly thinner than the iPhone Air.

The prototype featured a horizontally aligned dual-camera setup, a 6.59-inch display, and a rounded-corner metallic body, suggesting Xiaomi aimed to combine a large screen with a compact, elegant design. Earlier reports even claimed the device would house a 200-megapixel main camera, making it one of the thinnest phones ever to carry such a high-resolution sensor.

Despite the impressive design, sources indicate that the Xiaomi 17 Air project was ultimately cancelled. Industry observers note that ultra-thin smartphones often face significant trade-offs, including limited battery life, thermal management issues, and camera compromises. Coupled with weak market demand, these challenges likely made the project commercially unviable.

The leaked mould now serves as a rare look at Xiaomi’s internal design explorations rather than a preview of a forthcoming launch, showing the company’s continued interest in pushing the boundaries of smartphone slimness even if some ideas never make it to market.
