Google Says AirDrop Compatibility Coming to “Lot More” Android Devices Soon

Google Confirms AirDrop-Compatible Sharing Coming to More Android Devices in 2026

TL;DRGoogle confirmed that the Quick Share-AirDrop interoperability feature, currently a Pixel 10 exclusive, will come to more Android devices in 2026.

The wall between Android and iOS file sharing is crumbling further. According to a report from Android Authority, Google has officially confirmed that its Quick Share-AirDrop interoperability feature, currently exclusive to the Pixel 10 series, will expand to the broader Android ecosystem this year.

AirDrop to Come to More Android Devices

In a briefing at Google’s Taipei office, Eric Kay, VP of Engineering for Android, revealed that the company is actively working with partners to bring the cross-platform sharing capability to non-Pixel devices.

“Last year, we launched AirDrop interoperability. In 2026, we’re going to be expanding it to a lot more devices,” Kay stated during the event. He noted that after proving the technology’s stability with iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks on Pixel hardware, Google is now ready to roll it out to the wider market. “You should see some exciting announcements coming very soon,” he added.

This move effectively decouples the feature from Pixel-exclusive system components. Google had previously upgraded the Quick Share Extension into a full Play Store APK, a technical shift that signalled broader compatibility was inevitable.

While Google has not named specific manufacturing partners, the expansion is expected to be swift. Beyond file sharing, Kay emphasised Google’s renewed focus on lowering the barrier for iPhone users switching to Android. Building on a collaboration announced with Apple last December, Google is developing new methods to transfer a wider range of data types between the two operating systems, aiming for a seamless migration experience.
