Apple Watch May Soon See Cameras for AI-Powered Features
Apple is reportedly exploring the integration of cameras into its Apple Watch lineup, a move that could significantly enhance the device’s artificial intelligence capabilities. According to a recent report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant is considering adding cameras to both its standard Series watches and the rugged Ultra models within the next two years, potentially by 2027.
This strategic move follows the growing trend among smartphone manufacturers, such as Apple, Google, and Samsung. As a result, these companies are increasingly focusing on adding AI features to their devices. Specifically, the addition of cameras to the Apple Watch is primarily intended to support Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI-driven tools.
Gurman’s report details the proposed camera placement for Apple Watches. In the standard Series models, the camera would be integrated into the display. This design is similar to the front-facing camera on the iPhone. The Ultra model, known for its durability and advanced features, would have a different placement. Its camera would be positioned on the side of the watch, near the crown and button.
Enhancing Apple Intelligence with Visual Input
Apple Intelligence, which debuted with the iOS 18.1 update in October 2024, offers a visual search tool that allows users to identify objects and places in their surroundings and access relevant information. The inclusion of a camera would further enhance this feature, enabling real-time visual analysis and interaction.
Broader AI Enhancements Across Apple Devices
This development comes alongside other reported explorations by Apple into enhancing its wearable technology. Gurman previously reported on the company’s interest in adding temperature sensors and other physiological measurements to AirPods. Furthermore, Gurman also suggested in a previous report that Apple is working on integrating infrared (IR) cameras into future AirPods by 2026.
These IR cameras could serve multiple purposes. They enable in-air hand gesture detection and enhance spatial audio interaction with devices like the Apple Vision Pro. Additionally, they can detect environmental changes. Together, these features contribute to the broader Apple Intelligence ecosystem.
