The quirky Playdate handheld console, known for its unique design and curated game library, can now be purchased directly from developer, Panic’s website and shipped to Malaysia. While not officially sold in the country despite being manufactured here, this marks a change in stance for the developer.
Yes you can get the Playdate in Malaysia now, for a hefty price
Remember 2019’s buzz about Playdate? After some delays, it finally launched in 2022, but Malaysians were left scratching their heads as the console remained absent in its birthplace. The irony wasn’t lost on Panic themselves, who explained on their FAQ page that tax complications made direct sales infeasible. However, it seems they’ve reconsidered!
So, what exactly are you getting? Playdate boasts a charming black-and-white display (think e-ink vibes), a directional pad, two buttons, and a unique crank controller that adds a playful twist to your gaming experience. It comes pre-loaded with 24 games, and the fun doesn’t stop there! Upon setup, you’ll receive two new games every week for 12 weeks delivered directly over Wi-Fi. Want more? Dive into the Catalog app store to discover even more titles.
But there’s a catch. Despite local manufacturing, the Playdate doesn’t come cheap. At USD199 (RM952), the price isn’t for the faint of heart. Adding the optional cover bumps it up to USD219 (RM1,043). And remember, that’s excluding shipping and potential import taxes (an additional USD50!). This could push the final cost closer to RM1,186.
Ready to take the plunge? Head over to Panic’s website to grab your Playdate and embark on a quirky gaming adventure. Just remember, this handheld comes with a price tag that reflects its niche appeal.
