The end of an era for Android phones: Google has officially announced the end of support for devices running Android Lollipop (version 5.0). Launched in November 2014, this version of the OS introduced the now-familiar “Material Design” that revamped the entire Android look.
Android Lollipop No Longer Supported by Google
This move comes after nearly a decade of service and reflects the evolving tech landscape. Less than 1% of active devices are still on Lollipop. Because of this, Google will no longer provide updates for Google Play Services on these phones.
It’s important to note the distinction between Play Services updates and security updates. Play Services updates bring new features, security patches within the Play Store, and compatibility with the latest apps. Without these updates, Lollipop devices might face issues running newer apps. Security updates for Lollipop were already discontinued in March 2018.
“Android Lollipop was first released in November 2014, nearly 10 years ago and since then, we’ve introduced many innovative improvements and features for Android, which are unavailable on Lollipop,” said a Google spokesperson. “Today, we are discontinuing Google Play Services updates for Android Lollipop devices since they account for less than 1% of active Android devices.”
“Lollipop devices will continue to function but won’t receive any new features, important security updates, and may not be compatible with some apps. We strongly encourage users to upgrade to newer Android versions for the latest features and security enhancements.”
